The Tampa Bay Buccaneers make a quick turnaround following their first-week defeat in San Francisco. They will travel to Charlotte on Wednesday to play against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday. This is both the first street and the Buccaneers first division game against head coach Bruce Arians and it’s a chance to even reach the season record and place Carolina in an early hole in the rankings.
The Panthers have also just lost their home against an NFC West opponent after deviating from a tight 30- 27 decision on Sunday in favor of the LA Rams. While the Bucs and 49ers played a mostly defensive battle, with three combined selections and no team reaching 300 yards, the Panthers found themselves more in a shootout. With the return of Christian McCaffrey for 209 yards and two touchdowns, the Panthers scored less than three goals towards the end of the match. Now it’s up to the Bucs to slow down McCaffrey and quarterback Cam Newton. Here’s what you need to know to prepare for an action in Charlotte.

With less than five days to prepare though, it won’t be easy. Despite the loss, Carolina is always a tough opponent. The Bucs split the series last year one and one, dropping a game to Carolina in Charlotte but winning their home matchup later in the year. It will be the first time Arians will face a division opponent as the head coach of the Buccaneers.
“They’re always good, and Ron [Rivera] is a great coach,” Arians said. “I think Cam [Newton] is a primetime player if there ever was one, so we’ll get his best. [I] played him so many times in Arizona, we kind of know him [and] they know us, so [with] the short week, the biggest thing is to get there fresh and ready to go mentally and know what we’re doing.”
In each season from 2009 to 2018, the team that won the first game of the season between Tampa Bay and Carolina finished the sweep later in the year. Both teams became divisional opponents in 2002 when they coached NFC South. Previously, they had only met three times since Carolina joined the league as an extension team in 1995 after the Bucs had won twice.
The Buccaneers and Panthers have already played in primetime, including another Thursday night, Oct. 24, 2013, which the Panthers won in Tampa with 31-13. The guests were so injured by injury in this game that they put on a third quarter as all inactive positions injured the players. Nevertheless, Jacquizz Rodgers shocked the Panthers with his first 100-yard career and Mike Evans scored a 26-yard pass to tie the game in the second half.
The last meeting between the Bucs and the Panthers was also good for Tampa Bay. The Bucs made a decision on December 2nd between 24 and 17 at home.
